Sperm Motility Index (SMI)

Sperm Motility Index (SMI)

SMI (Sperm Motility Index) is a semi-quantitative “Quality Score” based on sperm motility, progressive motility, and velocity.  It is proprietary to the SQA line of semen analyzers and can be used as a GENERAL SCREENING TOOL for Human sperm “vigor” according to the following table:

GOOD SCORE: SMI > 160

MEDIUM SCORE: SMI > 80

POOR SCORE: SMI < 80

Researchers have also found correlations between SMI and relevant parameters in other species including Mice, Rats, Goats, Chickens, and Dogs.  Please see the attached summary of studies on the SQA (the last section deals with SMI in other species):  CLICK HERE FOR SQA ARTICLES
